How to check a used car in Edmonton
Five things to confirm before you finance a used vehicle here: who you are buying from, what the mechanic finds, what the registry says, how the car handles winter, and what the paperwork actually commits you to.
Start with the dealer, not the car
Every retail vehicle dealer in Alberta has to be licensed by AMVIC, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council. Ask for the licence and check that the business name on it matches the business you are dealing with. A licensed dealer is accountable to a regulator, has to advertise the all-in price, and has to disclose known material facts about the vehicle. A private seller has none of those obligations.
This matters for financing too. Interest-free financing through Murabaha or Ijarah is arranged on vehicles from established dealerships, not private-seller cars.
Get an independent mechanical inspection
Have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic you chose, not one the seller recommends. An out-of-province or unfamiliar vehicle is worth the extra hour. A reputable dealer will support this without hesitation. If a seller resists an inspection, that is your answer about the car.
- Brakes, suspension, and steering — the parts Edmonton roads punish most
- Frame and underbody rust from road salt, especially wheel wells and rocker panels
- Fluid leaks, cooling system pressure, and battery health
- Tire tread and age, plus whether a set of winters comes with the car
- Cold-start behaviour, block heater cord, and whether the heater and defrost work properly
Run a lien and history check
In Alberta, a loan registered against a vehicle follows the vehicle, not the seller. If you buy a car with an unpaid lien, the lender can come after the car. Search the Alberta Personal Property Registry using the VIN before any money changes hands, and pull a vehicle history report to see accident claims, registration history, and whether the car was previously written off or brought in from another province.
- Alberta Personal Property Registry search on the VIN — confirms no registered lien
- History report — accident claims, out-of-province or salvage branding, odometer readings over time
- VIN on the dash, door jamb, and paperwork all match
Read the paperwork before you sign
The number that matters is the total you will pay and the payment you will make every month, in writing, before you sign. Ask for a written breakdown of the vehicle price, every fee, the term, and the payment amount. Ask what is included and what is optional. Anything described verbally and not written down is not part of the deal.
With an interest-free structure there is one agreed price and a fixed payment schedule. Nothing compounds and nothing moves later, so the figure you see before signing is the figure you pay.
